Comfort and Care at Dr. Gregory S. Sexton, DDS

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR FIRST VISIT

Your first visit is an opportunity for you to meet our friendly, experienced team and for us to thoroughly assess your oral health. Dr. Sexton will do a comprehensive evaluation of your teeth and gums. We will also take any necessary X-rays so we can get a better idea of what is happening behind the scenes, as not all dental problems are visible to the naked eye. You will receive an oral cancer screening at your first visit as well. We do a visual evaluation and palpation.

It’s also important for us to get to know you and your smile goals. This enables us to devise an appropriate treatment plan to help you achieve the smile you want. Dr. Sexton is known for his conservative approach, so rest assured we will never recommend treatment you do not truly need or that is irrelevant to the cosmetic goals you want to pursue.

Cleanings are not performed at your first appointment since it is more about assessing your oral health as a whole. However, our team will make an additional appointment for you with our hygiene team after the first visit is completed.

Preventive Care

GUARD AGAINST DECAY AND DISEASE.

Preventive care is important to maintaining good oral health throughout your lifetime. This means having regular professional cleanings and evaluations to identify and treat any concerns early so they don’t become complex problems. Additional preventive treatment recommendations will vary by individual. Sometimes these include the use of fluoride varnish and sealants to help prevent bacteria from penetrating the enamel or causing decay in deep grooves on the chewing surfaces. We also offer Oral-B brushes, a variety of additional homecare products, and PreviDent as required, as well as MI Paste, which helps to remineralize the teeth.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

STOP CAVITY PROGRESSION.

A cavity can happen to anyone. The good news is that when you come in regularly for your preventive appointments, we can catch it when it is still small and easy to address with a simple filling. At Dr. Gregory S. Sexton, DDS, we fill cavities with tooth-colored filling material, also known as composite. This way we can match the color of your tooth exactly so that you can smile without fear of others noticing your new restoration.

Dental Crowns

RESTORE AND STRENGTHEN DAMAGED TEETH.

When a tooth is severely worn, decayed, or damaged, it might need a dental crown. Crowns completely cover the tooth to restore its strength and stability. First we take impressions, and then each dental crown is crafted to fit perfectly on the tooth. Dr. Gregory S. Sexton, DDS, offers lab-created crowns made of zirconia or e.max, as well as full-gold crowns for posterior teeth.

Periodontal Therapy

HEALTHY GUMS ARE IMPORTANT FOR LONG-TERM HEALTH

Healthy gums are an important part of oral health. Gum disease (also called periodontal disease) is an infection in the tissue around the teeth. If left untreated, gum disease can cause a lot of discomfort. Swollen, red, and bleeding gums are common symptoms. Early diagnosis and treatment can help save the tissue and the teeth, so it’s important to see your dentist as soon as possible if you notice symptoms.

Periodontal therapy includes scaling and root planing to remove bacteria and encourage tissue reattachment. You’ll then have a follow-up appointment to make sure the tissue is responding appropriately. Referral to a specialist may be necessary for complex periodontal disease.

Bruxism (teeth grinding) can increase the chance of periodontal deterioration. Our team will check your occlusion to make sure the movement of the teeth doesn’t indicate this. We may recommend a bite splint in addition to periodontal therapy if bruxism is an issue.

Tooth Extraction

SOMETIMES A TOOTH CANNOT BE SAVED.

The team at Dr. Gregory S. Sexton, DDS, will do everything possible to save a damaged tooth. However, sometimes a tooth is beyond repair and needs to be removed. This can happen in cases of severe gum disease, extensive infections, or broken teeth. At our practice, we perform nonsurgical extractions. These extractions are done under a local anesthetic to ensure patient comfort. The dentist will gently remove the tooth and ensure the socket is clean. You will receive aftercare instructions, and the gums should heal in just a few weeks.

TMJ Disorder Treatment

REDUCE PAIN AND MAINTAIN HEALTHY JAW FUNCTION.

TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint, which connects the skull and the lower jaw. There are two TMJs, one on each side. When a TMJ disorder is present, patients can experience pain, clicking, headaches, and occlusion (bite) issues. These symptoms can have a significant negative impact on a person’s life. If you are experiencing jaw problems, it’s important to see your dentist as soon as possible. Treatments for TMJ include bite splints and nightguards to help prevent bruxism, or teeth grinding. ClearCorrect, an orthodontic treatment, is another option and works by aligning the bite to its ideal position.
